Noguchi's Akari: What Separates the Lantern from Paper Lamps

Gifu washi, sun-moon stamp: the Akari, 1951, against generic paper lamps. The rare case where the copy isn't the point.

In 1951, Isamu Noguchi visited Gifu, its cormorant-fishing lanterns, and drew from them the Akari: sculptures of light in washi paper, still made in the same Japanese workshops by Ozeki. Facing them, an ocean of €15 paper lamps. The subject isn't fraud — it's the difference.

What an Akari Is

Washi paper drawn from mulberry bark, glued onto a bamboo frame, foldable, signed with the red sun-moon stamp. More than a hundred models, from the 1A tabletop piece to the UF columns. A grainy, warm, living light — "light as sculpture," Noguchi said.

What a Paper Lamp Is

The generic rice-paper globe, Regolit type, descends from the same Japanese lanterns — IKEA isn't copying Noguchi, both draw from the same source. Smoother machine paper, a metal spiral frame, a flatter light. At €15, it's an honest object.

How to Choose

An Akari 1A costs around €150-200, the large models several hundred — for a signed workshop object that can be collected. The stamp, the grain of the paper and the folding are what authenticate it. The rest is a matter of budget and attachment.
