Posthuman: some thirty wearable objects on avenue Victoria

An object you wear is no longer quite an object. Nor is it a garment. It is this undecided territory that Design Museum Den Bosch draws out of its stores, on avenue Victoria, and entry is free.

A collection built since 2017

Posthuman is not an exhibition assembled for the occasion: it is a sub-collection that the Dutch museum has been actively building since 2017, turned towards what is coming. It explores the boundary between the human, technology and nature — which, in practice, means objects that ask where the body ends.

The museum is showing some thirty pieces in Paris, at the invitation of the Netherlands embassy in France: jewellery, video installations, photographs and wearable objects, signed notably by Bart Hess, Lakea Shepard, Loan Favan (Naula_Studio) and Neri Oxman.

What it does to our subject

You might find the exercise remote when you are looking for a sofa. It is not so remote. Domestic furniture has always followed, twenty years late, what museums and schools first showed as forecast: soft and moulded materials, printing, surfaces that respond to light or heat all reached interiors by that route.

Neri Oxman, in particular, brought into design collections the idea that an object can be grown rather than made. It is not absurd to think we will see the consequences in a chair, and not only in a display case.
