Drouot for Beginners: How to Bid Without Getting Burned

Paris's auction temple, demystified. How to read a catalogue, set your limit, spot the piece — and buy clever design.

1 MIN · 26 July 2026

Drouot intimidates, wrongly. Paris's auction temple is one of the best places to buy design — provided you know the rules. The beginner's manual.

Before the sale

The public viewing (the day before and the morning of): you touch, you turn things over, you ask about condition and provenance. Read the catalogue — “attributed to” ≠ “by”; “in the manner of” = not the original.

Setting your limit

Low/high estimate plus buyer's premium (often 25–30% on top). Decide your maximum BEFORE, premium included, and hold to it — bidding goes to the head fast.

Spotting the right piece

Design often turns up in undervalued general sales. A Stilnovo lamp, an editioned chair the auctioneer hasn't identified: that's where you strike the deal.

Before you bid: run the catalogue photo through Beyit to confirm the attribution and the fair price.

The Beyit scan

One photo, every piece identified.

Your room, a shop window, an inspiration screenshot: send the photo, we find the pieces and their alternatives at every price.

On iPhone, the app does the same from your camera.
