Designer Office Chairs: The Icons and What They Fetch

The office chair is the piece of furniture you buy holding your nose — unless it comes from design. A handful of historic models combine ergonomics, line and genuine resale value: working from home has sent their prices soaring.

The icons that work

The Aluminum Group by Charles and Ray Eames (1958, Vitra/Herman Miller) is the archetype: a slim profile, fabric stretched between two aluminium flanks. Its padded version, the Soft Pad, has furnished executive offices for fifty years. Reckon on 2,000-4,000 € new, 800-2,000 € vintage depending on leather and condition. Around them: the EA 108 for meetings, the Vitra ID or the Aeron on the contemporary side — the latter can be found reconditioned at 500-700 €, half the price of new.

Reading a second-hand piece

On a vintage Eames: the label under the seat (Herman Miller, Vitra, ICF for the European licences), the state of the leather at the armrests, the tilt mechanism. Castors and gas lifts can be replaced — leather cracked across its full width cannot. Copies give themselves away at the flanks: too thick, visible welds, a soft tilt.

The honest maths

A serious office chair is used 1,500 hours a year. It is the one seat in the house where high-end second-hand systematically beats average new: better a Soft Pad from 1985 than a brand-new gaming chair at the same price.
