Jean Royère & the Ours Polaire: the most copied sofa in Paris
Soft curves, bolster arms, velvet: Jean Royère's Ours Polaire sofa has become the grail — and the most reproduced.
1 MIN · 5 OBJECTS IDENTIFIEDA sofa all in curves, without an angle, that looks like a cloud: Jean Royère's Ours Polaire (1947) is one of the most coveted — and most copied — pieces on the market.
Royère, the decorator of softness
Jean Royère (1902-1981) drew an organic, joyful world with no modernist dogma: the Liane lamp, the Œuf armchair, and above all the Ours Polaire — seat and arms made of plump bolsters.
The price of the original
A documented period Ours Polaire reaches dizzying heights at auction (hundreds of thousands of euros). Hence the explosion of “inspired” versions and reissues.
How to recognise it
The genuine piece has precise proportions, dense padding, a provenance. The “Royère-style” copies have bolsters that are too round or too soft, without the tension of the original. Beware: “in the style of” ≠ Royère.
