Atollo: Magistretti's Lamp and Its Replicas

Three elementary volumes — cylinder, cone, half-sphere — and one of the most recognisable lamps of the twentieth century. Vico Magistretti's Atollo, produced by Oluce since 1977, Compasso d'Oro 1979, has become the bedside object of interiors that watch themselves. This is where the replicas come undone.

The exact geometry

Everything is ratio: the diameter of the dome equals the height of the body, the mushroom's cast shadow cuts the cone at a precise point, the dome seems to float — it touches the cone only by an internal stem, invisible from the front. Replicas set the dome too low, thicken the cone, and the balance is lost.

Materials and versions

Lacquered metal (black, white, gold) for the original 233, opaline or smoked Murano glass for the glass versions, three official sizes. Oluce marking on the base, integrated dimmer on the recent editions.

The prices

Around €700–900 for the small metal one, up to €2,000 and more for the large glass versions. Vintage from the '70s and '80s trades at the level of new, sometimes above. Copies at €100–200 keep the silhouette from afar — never the presence up close.
