Real Brass vs Fake: Colour, Weight, Patina
Brass is everywhere — and so is painted gold. Three simple tests to tell solid metal from plating that will flake within a year.
1 MIN · 1 August 2026Brass everywhere: lamps, handles, tables, taps. But between solid brass and gilded plastic, the difference in durability is vast. Three tests so you never get fooled again.
1. The colour
Real brass has a warm tone, slightly uneven, deep. Painted gold is uniform, a garish yellow-orange, “plastic”. Be wary of a gold that looks too perfect.
2. Weight and the magnet
Brass is heavy and NON-magnetic: a magnet that sticks means gilded steel (so plated). Light and magnetic equals fake.
3. The patina
Real brass takes on a patina (it darkens, greens slightly) — that is its beauty. Plating flakes and reveals the grey metal beneath. A “brass” object that never patinates is lying.
