Handmade, therefore unique
True zellige is shaped by hand in Fez: clay worked, glazed, fired over a wood flame, then cut with a chisel. The result: subtle shifts, irregularities, a surface that catches the light differently on every tile.
True vs « zellige effect »
The industrial « zellige effect » tile imitates the variations… identically across the whole batch (hence false). The real thing has an uneven thickness, a glaze that crazes faintly, an unfinished back. Laid on a wall, it shimmers; the imitation stays flat.
Why it appeals
In an age of all-smooth and all-the-same, zellige brings the hand, the accident, the depth. It is the anti-industrial tile.
