Flagships: The Shop as the New Design Museum
Aesop, Hermès, Bottega: brands hire star architects and every shop becomes a reference. Retail has replaced the gallery.
1 MIN · 15 July 2026Where do we go today to see great interior design? Not to a museum — to a shop. Flagships have become the new temples of design, and every opening is an architectural event.
Every shop, a manifesto
Aesop has each of its shops designed to measure (no two alike); Hermès entrusts its spaces to discerning architects; Bottega, Saint Laurent and Dior vie with one another in materials and gestures. Commerce has become scenography.
Why it matters
The brand no longer sells merely a product there: it sells an experience of space, one you can copy at home. Materials (travertine, brushed steel, solid wood, tinted concrete) are tested at full scale before they reach our own interiors.
The museum has switched sides
Where one once visited a gallery, one now visits a flagship. It is free, it is forever renewed, and it is often bolder than the institutions.
