Bed in 140, 160 or 180: which size to really choose
The 140 saves space, the 160 became the standard, the 180 changes your nights. Room, couple, budget: the real decision grid.
1 MIN · 1 OBJECT IDENTIFIEDIt is the most structuring purchase in a bedroom, and it plays out over twenty centimetres. The right bed size does not depend on the catalogue: it depends on the room, on the couple, and on what you are willing to lose around it.
What each size says
The 140 × 190 remains the format of studios and guest rooms: two sleepers fit, but they do not forget each other. The 160 × 200 — the “queen size” — has become the standard for couples: 80 cm each, the width of a single bed. The 180 × 200 is the true quiet luxury: you no longer feel the other move. Its price is not limited to the base — sheets, duvet, everything moves up a size.
The room decides before you do
The rule: 60 cm of clearance on each side of the bed, 90 to open a wardrobe facing it. A 12 m² room lives well with a 160; below 10 m², the 180 turns the room into a corridor. And think of the stairwell: a 180 base does not turn everywhere — split bases exist for exactly that.
The detail everyone forgets
Length. Above 1.85 m, sleeping on a 190 shows; the 200 has become common, and some makers offer 220. Twenty centimetres of length are sometimes worth more than twenty of width.
