What Size Rug? A Room-by-Room Method
Living room, dining room, bedroom: the sizing rules that make a rug anchor the space instead of drifting in it.
2 MIN · 5 OBJECTS IDENTIFIEDThe most common decorating mistake comes down to a single object: the too-small rug, adrift in the middle of the living room like a beach towel. The right size follows three simple rules, one per room.
In the living room: front legs on top
The golden rule: all the front legs of the seating (sofa, armchairs) resting on the rug, which extends 20-30 cm on either side of the sofa. For a three-seat sofa, that means 200 × 300 cm at a minimum — the 160 × 230 only suits small living rooms with a two-seat sofa. Too large barely exists: a rug that comes within 20-30 cm of the walls enlarges the room.
In the dining room: chairs pulled back
The rug should extend 60-70 cm beyond the table on every side, so the chairs stay on it even when pulled back. A 160 × 90 table: a 240 × 170 rug at least. Below that, the chair legs catch the edge at every meal — better to have no rug at all.
In the bedroom: bedside runners
Two options: a large rug under the bed extending 60-70 cm on three sides, or two 60 × 120 runners on either side. The first anchors the room; the second is enough to keep bare feet comfortable.
Then, the material
The thick wool of the Berber — Beni Ouarain above all — warms contemporary interiors; the vintage rug, Persian or faded, brings the decades that new furniture lacks. The price gap between hand-knotted and machine-made copy runs from one to twenty: compare before you buy.
The mistakes you can spot at a glance
The 160 × 230 under a three-seat sofa: mistake number one across France, the beach towel in the middle of the living room. The thin rug laid bare on parquet, sliding and rucking up — a non-slip underlay costs 20 € and changes everything. Undyed wool under a dining table with children around. And glossy synthetic under 100 €: it flattens in six months and keeps the mark of every furniture leg.
The Beyit tip
Wool holds up better than its reputation: it naturally repels stains (the lanolin) and cleans with sparkling water, where synthetic soaks it all in. Faded vintage is the friend of lived-in homes — the worn patterns visually absorb everything. And the decorators' trick for large living rooms on a small budget: a huge jute at 150 € underneath, a smaller wool or vintage rug set on top, off-centre.
