5 bis rue de Verneuil: The Gainsbourg House Finally Opens
Frozen since 1991, Serge Gainsbourg's black house has been open to visitors since 2023. A collage-interior where every object sat in its exact place.
1 MIN · 5 October 2026For thirty years, 5 bis rue de Verneuil existed only from the outside — a graffiti-covered wall behind which Charlotte Gainsbourg kept everything intact. Since September 2023, the door opens: nothing has moved since 1991.
The collage-interior
Walls draped in black, a Steinway piano, the portrait of Marilyn, the collection of police badges, the lighters lined up to the millimetre: Gainsbourg composed his house like a framing. Neither design nor decoration in the magazine sense — a personal cabinet of curiosities where every object had its exact place, photographed a thousand times, never shifted.
What the house says about taste
The total black of the 1970s, the mix of academicism (buttoned armchairs, bronzes) and pop (jukebox, dolls), the mastered accumulation: the Gainsbourg house has fed a whole strand of French decoration — the one that prefers patina and obsession to safe good taste.
Visiting
The visit, in small groups and audio-guided by Charlotte, must be booked far in advance; the museum and the café-bookshop across the street complete the pilgrimage.
