Source Paris: what if a Paris souvenir were actually made in Paris?

People rarely bring back anything from Paris beyond a photograph — or an Eiffel Tower cast in resin six thousand kilometres from the Eiffel Tower. Source begins precisely there.

The idea

Source Paris is a pop-up of local makers, set up in the Marais. It offers souvenirs of the capital conceived by designers, artisans and brands from the region: ceramics, stationery, fine food, perfume, textiles. Everything is made in France, and each piece is chosen one by one, from artisans as much as from established houses.

The shop's tagline — « sincere souvenirs of places » — captures the wager: that an object brought back from a city might actually have been made by that city.

Why this is a design story, not a tourism one

The tourist souvenir is the one category of object where nobody pretends that origin matters. It is also the largest volume of objects produced anywhere around a given place, and the only one where we accept, without argument, that an object representing a spot should be made on the other side of the world, in a material with no connection to it, by someone who has never been there.

Overturning that is not a pose: it is the same reasoning we apply to an armchair. Who designed it, who made it, with what, and whether the price matches those answers. A Paris mug and a designer chair ask exactly the same question, two orders of magnitude apart.

Why it interests us

Because it is the most accessible way into our subject there is. You don't buy an editioned piece every year; you buy a twenty-euro object regularly. If you get into the habit of asking where it comes from at that price, you'll ask it at two thousand too.
