Plug-in pendant lights: the lamp that hangs without any rewiring

1 MIN · 1 OBJECT IDENTIFIEDIt is the question every tenant asks: how do you hang a proper lamp when the ceiling has no electrical outlet — or when it sits in the wrong place? The answer goes by a rather unglamorous name, the “plug-in pendant”, and it transforms whole rooms.
The principle
A shade or fitting pierced for a cable to pass through, a textile cord with a socket and a plug, a hook in the ceiling: the lamp drops down wherever you want it, the cable runs along the wall to the socket. No wiring, no electrician, and it all leaves with you when you move.
What it makes possible
Hanging a light above a table that sits off-centre in the room — the case in 90% of dining rooms. Lighting a reading corner without a floor lamp. Adding a soft glow to a bedroom without touching the ceiling light. Fabric-flex lamps, paper globes of the Akari kind and rattan shades all suit it particularly well.
Doing it properly
A hook with a fixing suited to the ceiling (plasterboard ≠ concrete), a cord long enough to trace a graceful curve rather than a taut diagonal, an LED bulb so a paper or fibre shade never overheats. And a dimmer on the plug — three euros — that turns any pendant into evening light.
