The original
Created by Xavier Pauchard, the Tolix A (later the A56, with armrests) is made of pressed sheet steel, galvanised and stackable. Still made in Autun, France. A terrace icon.
Spotting a real one
Thick steel, crisp folds, clean welds, quality anti-corrosion treatment, a stamped Tolix mark. The copies: thin metal that dents, coarse welds, flaking paint, no mark.
Vintage versus new
Genuine vintage Tolix chairs (with patinated galva) are highly sought after. Check the stamp and the condition of the metal.
