Villa Malaparte, Capri: Red on the Cliff
A red house set on a rock above the sea, immortalised by Godard in 'Le Mépris'. Architecture as pure gesture.
1 MIN · 1 OBJECT IDENTIFIEDThere are houses one never forgets: a red parallelepiped set on a rocky spur of Capri, a pyramid-stair climbing towards the sky and the sea. The Casa Malaparte is one of the most beautiful follies of the twentieth century.
A house as manifesto
Conceived at the end of the 1930s for the writer Curzio Malaparte (with the architect Adalberto Libera, soon overruled by his client's wishes). Malaparte called it « casa come me » — a house like me.
The red and the roof terrace
The Pompeian-red render, the inverted stair leading to a bare roof swept by the wind, a single white sail for the only windbreak. Here architecture is reduced to the essential: a plinth, a sky.
The role of cinema
Godard filmed « Le Mépris » (1963) here: Bardot on the roof, the sea everywhere. The house becomes the character of solitude and vertigo.
What stays with us
A colour, a form, a site: sometimes the strongest interior is the one that disappears before the landscape.
