The seat, arbiter of truth
120 metres of paper cord woven by hand, roughly an hour's work per chair: the envelope pattern is taut, even, dense. The copies weave a thicker, looser cord, often synthetic, that sags within a few months.
The wood and the Y
A backrest steam-bent from a single piece, a Y-shaped splat with continuous grain, fourteen pieces of solid wood joined without visible hardware. Beneath the seat, the genuine article bears the Carl Hansen & Søn stamp and the Wegner signature, engraved since the 2000s.
Price and vintage
New, the CH24 starts around €600–800 depending on wood and finish; the copies sit at €150–300. Danish vintage from the 1960s–70s trades at €400–900 apiece and climbs in sets — the cord can be rewoven, by craftspeople who do nothing else.
