The Wall Light: Five Icons That Replace a Table Lamp
From the Gras to the Serge Mouilles, the wall light frees up surfaces and draws the wall. The historic models, their prices, and where to place them.
1 MIN · 5 OBJECTS IDENTIFIEDThe wall light is illumination for the organised: nothing on the bedside table, nothing on the floor, an arm that comes out of the wall exactly where it should. The twentieth century turned it into a playground — and produced a handful of absolute icons.
The five that matter
The Gras lamp No. 304 (1921), bare ball-joints and a steel cone, is the functionalist ancestor: reissued by DCW at around €400, the old ones fetching far more. The wall lights by Serge Mouille (1953), insect arms and black reflector, have become a marker: reissues at €1,000–2,500, originals exceedingly rare. Charlotte Perriand's CP1, a pivoting half-cylinder, has moved from the alpine refuge to the most photographed of corridors — Nemo reissue around €250. Add Paolo Rizzatto's 265 (Flos, 1973), the great articulated arm by the bed, and Perriand's Applique à volet pivotant, the most copied of the five.
Where to place them
Reading in bed: the centre of the beam at seated shoulder height, the switch reachable without getting up. Corridor: a series of the same model, all at the same height, rather than a collection. Living room: the adjustable wall light replaces the floor lamp in small spaces.
The detail that gives it away
On vintage as on reissues, the ball-joint makes the difference: a joint that holds its position without a visible screw is the sign of serious making. The copies droop nose-first within six months.
