The Return of the Halogen Floor Lamp

It lit every living room of the 1990s before ending up on the pavement: the halogen uplighter is back — in Milanese flats, in sharp feeds, at auction. The most mocked piece of furniture of its generation is becoming a piece to own.

Why it's back

Because no one has done better at lighting an entire room: the bowl throws the light up to the ceiling, which diffuses it without glare. Total ambient light, dimmable — exactly what interiors weary of downlights are after. And because the slender look, black or chrome stem, corolla-shaped bowl, ticks every box of the 80s revival.

Which to seek

The peak of the genre: the signed pieces. The Papillona by Tobia Scarpa (Flos, 1975) and the uplighters by Gianfranco Frattini or Bruno Gecchelin trade at 400–1,500 € on the vintage market. Below that, the anonymous Italian productions of the 1980s — often very well drawn — still go for 50–150 € at the flea market. That is where a good eye pays off.

The clever move

The 300 W halogen pencil bulb is a thermal power station: today it can be swapped for dimmable R7s LEDs that cut consumption tenfold without changing the lamp. Check the dimmer — it is the first thing to go — and the steadiness of the stem.
