Kajsa Willner, Malmö: a pewter ear, and shelves like puddles

A life-size ear, cast in pewter, fixed to the wall: it is a coat hook. A mirror-polished steel shelf, cut like a puddle spilling off the wall. Kajsa Willner makes serious objects that do not take themselves seriously, which is why we wanted them.

Who she is

Born in 1982, an industrial designer in Malmö, Sweden. Her research studio often starts from a scientific phenomenon observed in nature and works between design, science and industry, as far as finding new uses for industrial waste. Sculptures, installations, materials, exhibitions. And a few objects to live with at home, the ones shown here.

The walls have ears

The series says it all in its title. A human ear, at 1:1 scale, cast in pewter, screwed to the wall to hang a coat or a bag. €400, made to order. It is the piece of the drop that gets people talking: put it in a hallway and nobody walks past without reacting.

Magic Waters

Wall shelves in mirror-polished steel, cut in puddle shapes. They reflect the room and make the wall look like it is leaking. The small one, 25.5 by 33 cm, €550. The pair of large ones, one standing and one lying, sold together, €870. Made to order, shipping €100 from Malmö.

Why she is in drop 001

Because a drop needs at least one piece that makes you smile, and these are as well made as they are funny. Kajsa Willner is one of the six studios in the first Beyit drop, opened on 1 October.
