La Piscine — Ramatuelle 1969, the Most Copied Summer in French Cinema
Delon, Schneider, a villa, some rattan: the poolside scene that still defines Riviera style. What's in it, what to buy back.
1 MIN · 19 October 20261969, a villa above Ramatuelle, a poolside filmed like a chamber drama: Jacques Deray's La Piscine fixed the imagery of the Riviera summer for fifty years. Every June, the scene resurfaces on every moodboard. Pause.
What the scene shows
Low sun loungers with striped mattresses, rattan and wicker armchairs, plain parasols, aperitif trays, smoked glasses in yellow and amber. Nothing designer, nothing signed: French summer furniture of the 1960s, exactly what the flea markets of the South were shifting by the hundred back then.
The market today
This summer furniture has become a vintage segment in its own right: rattan armchairs from the 1950s-70s change hands at 150 to 500 euros apiece depending on the state of the caning, period folding loungers for far less, and amber glassware can still be found for a few euros at a car boot sale — the cheapest way into the whole category.
The spirit rather than the letter
Riviera style cannot bear the total look: a pair of patinated rattan armchairs, a stripe, some warm glassware are enough. New pieces in « vintage spirit » saturate quickly — genuinely aged wicker, never.
The move of the column: pause, capture, scan on Beyit — period rattan and its reissue do not tell the same story.
