Parasite — the Park house doesn't exist, its furniture does

The Park house, its living room crossed by a ten-metre window, its hanging garden: it is all set, built for Bong Joon-ho's film. But put the living room on pause — the table and the sofa are real pieces, signed by one of the great names in contemporary Korean furniture.

The real inside the fake

Production designer Lee Ha-jun furnished his set with pieces by Bahk Jong Sun, a Korean cabinetmaker known for his solid-wood volumes and strictly horizontal lines. The long table in the living room and the low sofa come from his workshop: walnut, elongated proportions, no ornament. The Parks' luxury had to be illegible to anyone who doesn't know — that is exactly it.

The grammar of the scene

Everything is low, long, aligned with the window: the eye runs towards the garden without catching on a single high back. This is the grammar of Korean minimalism — more horizontal than the Japanese, warmer than European minimalism, carried by solid wood rather than by white.

Getting the scene

Look for solid-wood tops of a single species, low and deep seating, and resist accessorising: in the scene, the surfaces are bare. A table of this order from a cabinetmaker runs into the thousands of euros; the spirit, though, begins by subtracting rather than buying.

The column's gesture: pause, capture, scan on Beyit — to put a name and a price on what the film never says.
