Plegat & Joubin: an architecture studio signs its first collection

For ten years the Paris studio drew bespoke pieces for its own sites. Edition 01, shown in the Marais during the Design Week OFF, is its first collection under its own name.

3 MIN · 4 OBJECTS IDENTIFIED

For ten years, Plegat & Joubin drew furniture for other people's building sites. In September the studio signed its own: Edition 01, its first collection, shown for six days on rue des Blancs-Manteaux during the Paris Design Week OFF.

A studio, not a brand

Pauline Plegat and Matthieu Joubin are architects. She went through the Académie Charpentier before the Versailles school of architecture; he through the Lyon school of interior architecture, then Versailles too. They founded their studio in Paris in 2016 and have worked since on three registers the studio refuses to separate: architecture, heritage and interiors. About ten people today, and a line summed up in four words on their site: quality, durability, elegance, sobriety.

Their most seen project is Maison Bohème, nine apartments of 25 to 120 m² above a Montmartre brasserie, delivered in 2024 after two years of works. Pierre Frey textiles, chequered tiles, retro basins, velvet, and oak headboards drawn for the place. That last detail is the one that matters here: bespoke pieces, made once, for one address.

From bespoke to edition

Moving from bespoke to edition is a change of nature, not of scale. A bespoke piece belongs to a site; an edited piece carries a name, a number, a price, and can be made again. That is exactly the line Beyit looks at when it sets an object against its four prices: original, vintage, affordable, copy.

An "Edition 01" is an object at year zero. No vintage yet, since no example has had time to age. No copy yet, since nobody has judged it desirable enough to imitate. There is only the original. It is the one moment in a piece of furniture's life when the listed price is simply the price.

The pieces

Edition 01 starts from nature and its organic shapes: the breath of the wind, the run of water, light through leaves. It holds a sofa, two stools, a coffee table, lights and rugs, and every piece is made with a named craftsman.

The Echo sofa has rounded arms picked out in wood, worked by maison Laval. The studio calls it a refuge, "the softness of a pebble polished by water". The Nami coffee table sets a round top in pale wood on two sculpted legs. The Nymphéo and Nymphéa stools, one in pale oak, one in dark wood, carry a bouclé cushion like a water lily on a pond.

Light comes from two pieces. The Amara wall light, also made as a ceiling light, is drawn with the studio Garnier & Linker. The Eole chandelier, an exceptional edition, joins Tiffany-style stained-glass panels made by Sophie Toporkoff's workshop on a brushed-brass frame by Garnier & Linker. On the floor, the Rhéo rug, edited exclusively with Galerie Diurne in a series of four, unrolls the blue bed of a stream flecked with ochre. The ceramics are by Céline Salomon.

Prices are not published: ask the studio. Photographs by Yannick Labrousse, who had already shot Maison Bohème.

Why it matters to us

Interior architects who edit are a French tradition: Charlotte Perriand, Pierre Paulin, Andrée Putman all began by drawing for a place before drawing for everyone. The question for a first collection is not whether it is beautiful. It is whether it outlives the site that gave birth to it. Edition 01 says, in its very title, that there will be a sequel.

Getting there
